Return Authorizations during the Christmas Holidays

The Christmas holidays are a special time, filled with joy and family reunions. Many people take advantage of this time to return home and reunite with their loved ones. However, traveling during this season can present complications, especially for foreigners with expired Residence Permits in the process of renewal.

With the arrival of the holiday season, the Immigration and Border Units experience a significant increase in requests for Return Authorizations, a necessary document when the Residence Permit has expired and is in the process of renewal. This can affect the agility in processing common authorizations, as return requests are prioritized.

With the aim of optimizing resources and addressing the growing demand, the General Directorate of Immigration and Borders has implemented exceptional measures from November 27, 2023, to January 14, 2024. During this period, foreigners will be able to enter Spain through Land or Maritime Border Posts with a valid passport, expired Residence Permit, and renewal application.

It is crucial to note that those planning to travel by plane must obtain the Return Authorization in advance. Airlines may reject passengers without this authorization.

The following steps must be followed:

Copy of Full Passport or Valid Travel Document: Ensure to provide a legible copy of all pages of your passport or travel document. The information must be up-to-date and valid for the period of your trip.

Copy of the Residence Permit Renewal or Extension Application: If your residence permit is in the process of renewal or extension, attach a copy of the application or the receipt confirming its submission. This is crucial to demonstrate your legal status in the country.

Official Application Form Printout (EX-13): Download, complete, and sign the official application form EX-13. Make sure to provide all required information accurately and legibly.

Documentation supporting the trip: Include documentation supporting the reason for your trip, as well as the tickets and planned dates.

Payment of the Corresponding Fee: Make the payment of fee 790 012 "Return Authorization" as indicated by the competent authority. Make sure to include the payment receipt with your application.

Remember that Return Authorizations are valid only for crossing Spanish border posts according to the Schengen Borders Code.
